Recently on show (from 22nd July 2011 to 30th September 2011) at the National Railway Museum in York was 'Japan's First Railway: Colour woodblock prints from the 1870s' a collection of prints, by various artists, showing the first railway to be built in Japan. The opening of the railway was met with great excitement with many of the earlier prints being produced before the artists had seen a train resulting in fantastical creations based on pictures in books from Britain and America. Later prints show the Emperor using the new railway and the growing presence of Western fashions in Japan.
