Little Tokyo, tucked away on a quiet street behind House of Fraser, has long been one of my favourite restaurants in Leeds. I couldn't count the number of times that I've eaten here but every time has been great. The menu is extensive offering delicious steaming bowls of ramen, tasty yakisoba and warming Japanese curry as well as a wide selection of fresh sushi and sashimi. There are also tasty snacks like ebi katsuyakitori skewers and gyoza dumplings available. My favourite dishes, however, are the Bento meals. Served in a lacquer-style box with compartments filled with rice, salad in a delicious fresh dressing and tempura vegetables you can choose from a wide variety of accompaniments like smoky eel teriyaki, pork tonkatsu or, my personal favourite, a selection of sashimi. The drink selection is good too; Asahi on draft, glasses of umeshu complete with little plums and delicious iced green tea. When it comes to dessert the menu is filled with unusual sweet and tasty treats. Ice cream comes in coconut, green tea and even wasabi flavour, which is actually pretty nice. There are also crispy marshmallow parcels and deep-fried ice cream served with a sweet konbu syrup.

The restaurant's decor is cosy and quirky. Bamboo and branches filled with fairylights decorate the walls, tables are cut from big, irregular pieces of wood and a small bridge carries you over an indoor pond filled with koi. The staff are friendly and look the part in their jinbei and kimono. Stepping into Little Tokyo is like stepping into another world. Sure, it may not be the most authentic Japanese restaurant, some of the dishes have been given a western or Chinese twist and the Bento-style of serving food is more traditionally used for takeaway lunchboxes than in a restaurant, but eating there is a unique and tasty experience. If you are willing to overlook the odd foreign influence Little Tokyo offers as good a Japanese dining experience as I've ever had in the UK.
